Program Overview
Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy
The Graduate Diploma provides specialised training in the core disciplines of extractive metallurgy - mineral processing, process mineralogy, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy. It has been devised for the benefit of graduates from related fields of study currently working in the minerals industry who now find they need specialised knowledge in extractive metallurgy, and others who wish to prepare for a higher degree in extractive metallurgy (i.e., Masters or PhD).
Overview
The Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy is designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills in the core disciplines of extractive metallurgy. The program is suitable for graduates from related fields of study who are currently working in the minerals industry and require specialised knowledge in extractive metallurgy.
Admission Requirements
- Enrolment restrictions: All graduate courses are subject to restriction.
- Special requirements: Attendance at on-campus laboratory sessions is a requirement in the practicum unit.
- Entry requirements (onshore): Recognised Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7) or higher, or equivalent training, in a relevant area. Students with alternative satisfactory preparation may also be admitted. Students who do not have equivalent knowledge and background in chemistry, thermodynamics, physics, and mathematics will be required to undertake additional preparatory units prior to admission.
- English language requirements: Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of mineralogy, mineral processing, and extractive metallurgy and apply this knowledge to the analysis of complex metallurgical systems.
- Critically evaluate and integrate principles of process unit operations, mineral and metallurgical processing to design, optimise, and troubleshoot extractive metallurgy flowsheets.
- Apply advanced technical skills in laboratory and practical metallurgical processing, using appropriate instrumentation, experimental methods, and data analysis to inform professional practice.
- Analyse and interpret mineralogical data to predict material behaviour and inform decision making in mineral and metallurgical processing.
- Exercise professional judgement in addressing technical, environmental, and economic challenges in the minerals industry, demonstrating autonomy, accountability, and ethical responsibility.
- Communicate effectively with specialist and non-specialist audiences, conveying complex metallurgical concepts, and their implications clearly in written, oral, or graphical forms.
- Work both independently and collaboratively to solve advanced problems in extractive metallurgy, demonstrating initiative, adaptability, and leadership in professional contexts.
- Evaluate the environmental and ethical implications of metallurgical practices, including the responsible use of digital technologies, to support sustainable decision-making in the minerals industry.
